The stunning Sassi di Matera consist of a labyrinth of cave dwellings, churches, and monasteries dating back over 9000 years.
They are divided into the districts of Sasso Caveoso and Sasso Barisano and are one of the oldest living cities in the world. Moreover, with its crown of honey-stoned houses perched above a ravine, Matera can boast a unique landscape. The town’s mayor Raffaello De Ruggieri told The Times that the 400-strong crew, plus extras, and an increase in tourism could boost the local economy by 12 million euros ($13.3 million).
