The set will be located in the area between Misurina Lake and Monte Piana in the municipality of Auronzo (Belluno) and it will be completely inaccessible on the days of the shooting. Daniela Larise Filon, Mayor of Auronzo was contacted by representatives of Disney, which holds the production rights of the Star Wars saga, to request the possibility to totally shut off the area between May 5 and 12.
Even with the help of the Italian police and a Milan based company specializing in security services, it will not be easy, considering the conspicuous and continuous tourist flow in the area. In addition, the 200 people crew asked to install a kind of “base camp” in Misurina, where equipment and other logistic facilities will be located.
The scenes that will have the background of the Three Peaks of Lavaredo will be included in “The Red Cup” episode of the Star Wars saga, which should be released in 2018. “The Red Cup” does not belong to the Trilogy, it is a spin-off that portrays the same characters of the main story line, like Han Solo and Luke Skywalker. In 2015, Disney, who has acquired all the rights to the story that began 40 years ago with the first episode of Star Wars, inaugurated the new trilogy with the film “The Awakening of Force”.
Production plans envisage annual releases alternating episodes of the Trilogy with spin-offs, such us “The Red Cup”.
Mayor Filon is considering the benefits which the Tre Cime of Lavaredo could gain from such use of the area’s imagery: “These places are already known all over the world, they are part of UNESCO’s heritage and are very popular. Such a famous movie will mean further interest in the area; we cannot but be happier.”
