Etsy, the virtual marketplace launched in 2005, which today has more than 1.9 million vendors and over 30 million active buyers around the world, in 2016 made a gross annual revenue of $2.8 billion, of which 34% was originated outside the United States. Now the company points to Italy to increase this percentage.
Specializing in handmade and vintage products, Etsy has plenty of Italian vendors that offer goods characterized by the unparalleled Italian style, high quality, and skillful craftsmanship. For this reason, the virtual marketplace decided to launch in Italy its first ever real marketplaces. ‘Etsy Made in Italy‘ – this is the name of the initiative – will take place simultaneously, from December 1st to December 3rd, in 6 Italian cities – Como, Florence, L’Aquila, Brescia, Catania, and Pescara – where creative artisans and collectors will transform their virtual stores into real market stalls to give the opportunity to residents and tourists to find original vintage products and unique creations ranging from clothing to toys, accessories, household items, art works, and design items.
Francesca Ormezzano, senior country specialist for Italy, commented: “The support for creative entrepreneurship and the relationship with local communities, both online and offline, are key aspects of Etsy’s development. In particular, we decided to invest in the Italian market to enhance its creativity, craftsmanship, and style that are recognized all over the world. The launch of the first ‘Etsy Made In Italy’ event in 6 cities is a very important moment in this growth process, and we think it is the perfect opportunity to give visibility to the brand and to allow vendors to come into contact with potential buyers.”
