March 19, 2017 is a date that will be written in the history of Italian skiing. Federica Brignone first, Sofia Goggia second and Marta Bassino third, on the podium of the Aspen giant, the last race of the World Cup, there were only the colors of the Italian flag. Brignone, dominated the race since the first round when she finished 94 hundredths of a second ahead of Mikaela Shiffrin, who in the second round did not perform as well as in the first, while Brignone did not miss a beat. She crossed the finishing line 1 “44 ahead of Goggia and 1” 47 of Bassino.
21 years after the legendary trio Compagnoni-Panzanini-Kostner, Italy once again occupies the whole podium of a women’s World Cup race. On May, 2 1996 at the Narvik giant in Norway, Kostner was happy for Panzanini when she saw her crossing the finish line; and when Compagnoni arrived, they both ran towards her to rejoice together. In Aspen history repeated itself: upon arrival, Brignone was embraced by her companions, Goggia and Bassino. They were aware that they had just done something incredible, and that their victory will mark the Italian skiing history.
The Aspen hat-trick closes a spectacular season in which the Italian team collected 43 podiums; a record that paves the way to the coming Winter Olympics.
